Stromatolites are structures built by the metabolic action of
microbes. They are considered living fossils and in some locations,
they are composed of dolomite. Dolomite is a calcium and magnesium
carbonate. Dolomite that is not considered "ancient"is rare.
Researchers are now looking for "new" dolomite that has been
precipitated by microbial activity in lagoons like those on the

can be mixed with calcite, magnesium calcite, and aragonite.
Distinguishing dolomite from these similar minerals can be
accomplished with a high resolution field spectroradiometer, like a
