Using Near-infrared Spectroscopy to Detect Arsenic Accumulation in Pteris Vittata

This study investigates arsenic accumulation in ferns, using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) to develop a rapid, cost-effective method for measuring arsenic in both the plants and their environments. The research utilises NIRS to indirectly assess arsenic by analysing its secondary effects on organic compounds within Pteris vittata (Chinese brake fern). By integrating algorithms to analyse spectral data and correlating these with traditional chemical tests (USEPA Method 6020), this approach provides a testing method with an uncertainty of ±0.5. Furthermore, the process is significantly more efficient, requiring only minutes rather than the current time-consuming laboratory procedures. This method provides a feasible way to monitor the heavy metal contamination in terrestrial environments.
