Lithium Mineral Exploration with UV-VIS-NIR Spectrometer (350–2500 nm)

Lithium has emerged as one of the most critical elements in modern industry due to its central role in rechargeable battery technologies. It is a key component in lithium-ion batteries, which power electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronics, and renewable energy storage systems. As the demand for clean energy and electrification continues to grow globally, the strategic importance of lithium exploration has grown. Identifying and mapping lithium-bearing minerals is a critical step in meeting future supply needs, particularly in hard rock pegmatite deposits and sedimentary lithium-rich clays. Spectral Evolution’s UV-VIS- NIR spectrometer has been a popular tool for this purpose.Li-Bearing Clays & Micas

A UV-VIS-NIR spectrometer like the oreXpert™ operating across the 350–2500 nm range provides a powerful, non-destructive tool for mineral exploration. Lithium itself is not spectrally active in this range; however, its host minerals like spodumene, lepidolite, petalite, hectorite, and other lithium-bearing clays exhibit characteristic absorption features in the visible to shortwave infrared (SWIR) region. These spectral signatures arise from the vibrational overtones and combination bands of OH⁻ groups, water, and other associated elements within the mineral structure.

By analyzing reflected light from rock and soil samples, spectrometers can quickly identify alteration zones and lithium-hosting mineral assemblages in the field. The 1400 nm and 1900 nm water absorption bands, as well as features near 2200 nm related to Al–OH and Mg–OH bonds, help distinguish lithium-bearing clays like hectorite and illite. In pegmatite exploration, differentiating spodumene from similar-looking silicates becomes possible through subtle features in the NIR-SWIR range. These instruments can also be integrated into core logging workflows, offering rapid, high-resolution mineralogical characterization to guide drilling and geochemical assays.

Lithium Mineral ExplorationUV-VIS-NIR spectrometers is a cost-effective and field-deployable technology that enhances lithium exploration workflows by providing rapid mineral identification and alteration mapping. Covering the 350–2500 nm spectral range, it enables geologists to target lithium-rich zones more efficiently, reduce sampling costs, and improve decision-making in both early-stage exploration and advanced resource evaluation.
