oreXpress SpectrometerPress Release:
Fast, accurate, and actionable analysis for mining exploration.

Lawrence, MA – September 26, 2016 – With exploration budgets completely cut or agonizingly tight, it’s critical to get accurate data during
the initial phase of exploration. Spectral Evolution’s oreXpress™ NIR field spectrometer with EZ-ID™ mineral identification software is being used by geologists working to better understand the geology and alteration patterns of areas to establish vectors toward mineralization.

The oreXpress NIR spectrometer with rugged contact probe is built for field work. A full range spectrometer (350-2500nm), it delivers the highest resolution and sensitivity available in a portable field unit. Lightweight, rugged and battery powered, geologists can quickly collect accurate spectra to map an area. Then using EZ-ID, they can identify minerals by comparing target spectra against more than 1500 known spectra in the USGS and SpecMIN™ libraries. Since the DARWin™ SP Data Acquisition software included with the oreXpress saves everything as an ASCII file, other third party software programs can also be used for analysis and 3D mapping using oreXpress field data.

In one example, junior mining collected more than 2000 spectra in Chile with a Spectral Evolution system to identify alteration mineral vectors for gold and silver. They found that sodium rich alunite and vuggy silicas identification correlated with elevated gold in trench assays. Areas of strong absorption at 1415 nanometers indicated an increase in dickite and nacrite that corresponded to increasing gold and silver grades in the trenches. They were able to use the data to prioritize additional drill targets.

In another case, the oreXpress and EZ-ID are being used in exploration for large scale copper/gold porphyries in Papua New Guinea. An extensive area of potassic alteration has been identified with scans from outcrops characteristic of copper porphyry deposits. Porphyry style mineralization in alteration from K-feldspar – magnetite – hematite – biotite was identified. Additional drilling has begun and the oreXpress is now being used to scan core.

The oreXpress provides geologists with a field and core shack tool for better understanding alteration and mineral assemblages during exploration.
