harvard forestPress Release: Spectral Evolution Field Spectroradiometers Help Scientists Detect Invasive Species

Lawrence, MA – July 26, 2018 – The forests of the Eastern United States has been under attack by a small aphid-like insect, the Hemlock Wooly Adlegid (HWA) that has infested large swaths of hemlock forest stands. The HWA is responsible for a large decline in the health of forest vegetation and also in altering forest ecosystem services. Spectral Evolution joined scientists from the University of Massachusetts, Boston and Harvard University in conducting yearly surveys to monitor the impact of HWA in Harvard Forest, a long term ecological research site in western Massachusetts.

Much of the surveys are done via field identification of HWA. Since it is hard to detect with the naked eye, Spectral Evolution provided high resolution field spectroradiometers to provide rapid field hyperspectral data acquisition to assist in observing the infestation. Many researchers have been interested in using remote sensing technology in monitoring the HWAs presence and impact. Hyperspectral technology has been extremely useful in the detection of HWA.

Spectral Evolution provided an SR-6500 ultra-high resolution spectroradiometer with our unique leafclip that keeps the samples away from the light source and associated heat. The SR-6500 delivers high resolution and sensitivity:

Spectral Resolution
• 1.5nm @ 700nm
• 3.0nm @ 1500nm
• 3.8nm @ 2100nm

Noise Equivalence Radiance (with 1.5 meter fiber optic)
• 0.8×10-9 W/cm2/nm/sr @ 400nm
• 0.3×10-9 W/cm2/nm/sr @ 1500nm
• 5.8×10-9 W/cm2/nm/sr @ 2100nm

The SR-6500 is lightweight, rugged and reliable for field use and in situ measurements.
