Press Release:
Testing LEDs for Automotive Applications is a Critical Part of the Design and Manufacturing Process

Measure lumens, color, and voltage with portable spectroradiometers from Spectral Evolution.

Lawrence, MA – August 31, 2015 – LEDs are rapidly gaining acceptance for automotive use beyond interior and dashboard lighting. The advantages of LEDs for longer life, reliable operation, and increased illumination are moving LED technbology ointo headlamps and other exterior lights.

LEDs compared to convenrtional lights use less power and last longer. However LED manufacturing has its own set of challenges. Slight variations in the manufacturing process especially in lumens, color temperature and voltage make it difficult to consistently produce individual LEDs that are exactly alike. LED manufacturers handle inconsistencies by testing and binning LEDs. Spectral Evolution’s portable spectroradiometers like the PSR+™ can provide reliable, accurate and cost effective ways to test LEDs to CIE and ANSI standards. The PSR+ provides a portable full range
spectroradiometer that offers high resolution and maximum sensitivity (high signal-to noise ratio) with a spectral range from 350-2500nm.

Spectral Evolution spectroradiometers include DARWin™ SP Data Acquisition software with pull-down menus to calculate chromaticity coordinates and co-related color temperatures from the collected spectra. The following colorimetry capabilities are included:
▪ CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram with RGB gamut
▪ Scan results displayed graphically with a cross-hair overlay
▪ Coordinates are displayed in XYZ, x’y’Y, CIELab, CIELuv and mapped to RGB given the selected gamut

About Spectral Evolution
Established in 2004, Spectral Evolution is a leading manufacturer of laboratory and handheld portable spectrometers, spectroradiometers and spectrophotometers. Spectral Evolution spectrometers are used worldwide for many mission-critical lab, field and on-line process assignments due to their reliable, robust, rugged design and user-friendly one-touch features.

Spectral Evolution maintains a facility in Lawrence, Massachusetts which houses all operations including, design, prototyping, manufacturing and in-house repair facilities for the instruments that it markets and sells worldwide, either through direct sales, OEM sales or through distributor agents. Spectral Evolution also maintains state of the art spectral, spectral radiance and spectral irradiance calibration facilities for periodic calibration of equipment in the UV, VIS, NIR and SWIR wavelength regions.
